Iran has signed the additional protocol to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, enabling the United Nations nuclear watchdog to take snap inspections of its nuclear facilities.
Iranian representative Ali Akbar Salehi and head of the international nuclear watchdog, Mohamed ElBaradei, signed the agreement at the IAEA's headquarters in Vienna.
The protocol gives the UN nuclear watchdog the power to carry out searches at shorter notice, with as little as two hours' warning, and grants it broader searching powers.
The protocol also places stronger obligations on Iran to report all its activities relating to its nuclear fuel cycle, including imported machine components and uranium mining.
Iran has insisted its nuclear program is peaceful and geared only toward producing electricity while the US accuses Tehran of secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons.
