More than 2,700 coal mines have resumed operation after safety checks in north China's Shanxi province, Shanxi Coal Industry Bureau has announced.
The mines in operation account for some 70 percent of the province's total and their output capacity is over 90 percent of the total. Shanxi has roughly one third of the nation's coal reserves.
Operations at almost all Shanxi coal mines were halted and a thorough safety check was launched in the province in August after several serious explosion had occurred early this year.
By the end of November, the total coal output of Shanxi hit 350million tons and the yearly output is likely to exceed 400 milliontons.
The resumption of production was good news for provincial thermal power plants facing acute coal shortages because of soaring electricity consumption this winter.
