Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak expressed hope that the capture of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein would quicken the power transfer to the Iraqi people, the al-Ahram daily reported on Tuesday.
"The move will create a good opportunity to shift power to the Iraqi people ... in accordance with the precise timetable so Iraqis can rule themselves," the daily quoted Mubarak as saying in an interview.
"We are ready to work with all the Iraqi authorities as much as we can and as conditions allow to help ease Iraqi pain," he said.
Saddam, who had been on the run since the downfall of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on April 9, was captured alive near his hometown of Tikrit on Saturday evening.
Egypt has called for ending the US occupation of the war-torn country as soon as possible, while urging the United Nations to play a central role in post-war Iraq.
