Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has said that the capture of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein by US forces would help improve world situation to some extent, and Thailand would continue its humanitarian mission in Iraq.
"I believe that the world situation will improve to some extent after the arrest of the former Iraqi leader, especially the situation in war-torn Iraq itself, as international efforts to rehabilitate and reconstruct Iraq can, from now on, be accelerated," he was quoted as saying by the Thai News Agency on Tuesday.
He also confirmed that Thailand's humanitarian mission in Iraq would continue until its one-year agreement with the US ends next year.
"Thai troops in Iraq will be maintained to help reconstruct war-torn Iraq, with the first batch to return home after six months, and the second batch to continue the mission for another six months," he said.
Thailand has sent over 400 troops to help reconstruct Iraq since October.
The former Iraqi leader was arrested by US forces Saturday evening in his hometown Tikrit.
