Russian PM arrives in Tokyo for three-day visit

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov arrived in Tokyo Monday afternoon for a three-day visit to Japan to discuss such issues as a crude-oil pipeline in East Siberia and bilateral trade.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov arrived in Tokyo Monday afternoon for a three-day visit to Japan to discuss such issues as a crude-oil pipeline in East Siberia and bilateral trade.

Kasyanov will meet Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi later in the day and Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on Tuesday, Kyodo News reported.

During the visit, Japan and Russia are expected to issue a joint statement on bilateral relations, economic cooperation and other issues, and two other documents on trade and curbing illegalfishing, Kyodo quoted Japanese officials as saying.

The two premiers are also expected to agree on the establishment of a new institution to promote bilateral trade and investment, said the officials.

On the pipeline project, Koizumi and Kawaguchi will again urge Russia to adopt Japan's proposal that the pipeline should run fromAngarsk near Lake Baikal to Nakhodka in Russia's Far East, and be built with the help of Japanese loans, said the officials.

China has been negotiating with Russia to have the pipeline runto its Daqing City of Heilongjiang Province.

Kasyanov is scheduled to leave Japan later Wednesday.
