US President George W. Bush was informed early Sunday morning of the capture of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, the White House said on Sunday.
US national security adviser Condoleezza Rice told Bush of the news shortly after 5:00 a.m., but the president was informed of initial belief of the capture Saturday afternoon while he was at the presidential retreat of Camp David, a senior White House official told reporters.
"There's a strong indication to support that it is him (Saddam Hussein). The president was briefed about the success of the operation," the official said. "The message to the Iraqi people isthat the blanket of fear is beginning to lift."
The US president is expected to make a public comment on the event later on Sunday, the official added.
