At least 19 killed in Cote d'Ivoire shooting: official

The Cote d'Ivoire government said on Friday that a total of 19 people were killed from a night of shooting between unknown armed assailants and government troops inthe heart of the main Cote d'Ivoire city of Abidjan.

The Cote d'Ivoire government said on Friday that a total of 19 people were killed from a night of shooting between unknown armed assailants and government troops inthe heart of the main Cote d'Ivoire city of Abidjan.

Reading a government statement on national television, Defense Minister Rene Amani said that "the toll for the time being is 18 dead and some prisoners on the attackers' side, one dead among the forces of national security."

Military sources said shots were first heard in Abobo district,where a 4x4 vehicle ran a checkpoint patrolled by military and police officers, grabbing weapons and shooting one soldier, who later succumbed to his injuries.
