Beijing urban rail line to be put into trial operation

The No. 4 rail line between Sihui and Tongzhou in eastern Beijing will be put into operation on a trial basis Dec. 28, officials with the Beijing subway company said Friday.

The No. 4 rail line between Sihui and Tongzhou in eastern Beijing will be put into operation on a trial basis Dec. 28, officials with the Beijing subway company said Friday.

The rail line is connected with the No. 1 rail line, which runsunder Tiananmen Square, at Sihui.

With an investment of 3.4 billion yuan (about 410 million US dollars), the double-track, 19-km rail line is an overground extension of the current subway to form a major west-east artery in the city.

The provisional price for a single ticket on the new rail line is three yuan (36 US cents), and for the passengers who wish to change to the No. 1 or No. 2 rail lines, five yuan (60 US cents), according to the officials.

Beijing now has 95 km of urban rail transport in operation, of which subways make up 54.15 km.

In addition, the No. 5 rail line is now under construction, andthe government will launch the construction of another two new rail lines by the end of this year.

By 2008, when Beijing is to host the Olympic Games, the length of the city's urban rail transport is expected to reach 300 km.
