A missile from a cruiser equipped with the Aegis air defense system tracked and shot a mock warhead down over the Pacific on Thursday, in the fifth sea-based missile intercept test, the Pentagon said.
The Standard Missile-3 fired from the cruiser USS Lake Erie "successfully engaged the target" about four minutes after the dummy warhead was launch from the Pacific Missile Range facilityon the island of Kauai, Hawaii, said Chris Taylor, spokesman forthe US Missile Defense Agency.
This was the fifth sea-based missile intercept test and the fourth time the intercept was a success. The last test failed on June 18.
The Pentagon expects to have a sea-based defense that can be deployed in an emergency against short- and intermediate-range missiles as early as 2005-2006, US military officials have said.
The sea-based system is only one of a variety of missile defenses being explored by the Pentagon, as part of the Bushad ministration's effort to build a national defense system.
