Wen arrives in Ottawa for official visit to Canada

At the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in the Canadian capital Ottawa Wednesday evening, beginning his first official visit to Canada as China's Premier.

At the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in the Canadian capital Ottawa Wednesday evening, beginning his first official visit to Canada as China's Premier.

In a written statement issued on his arrival at the Ottawa International Airport, the Chinese Premier said he is here to convey to the Canadian people the warm greetings and best wishes of the Chinese people.

The statement made clear that bilateral relations between China and Canada are on the right track with new opportunities for development on the horizon. It said that further deepening of the China-Canada comprehensive cooperative partnership not only serves the fundamental interests of the two peoples, but is also conducive to maintaining and promoting peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region.

The statement said the Chinese Premier hopes that his current visit to Canada will further deepen mutual understanding, expand areas of agreement, promote friendship and develop cooperation thus pushing forward China-Canada relations.

The Chinese Premier will have formal meetings with Prime Minister Jean Chretian as well as with leaders of the Canadian Senate and the House of Commons on Thursday. He is also going to meet and hold talks with the incoming Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, who will be sworn in Friday. As part of his jam-packed itinerary, Wen Jiabao will give an important speech to the Canadian business community as well.
