UN anti-corruption accord signed in Mexico

Officials from around the world signed the first worldwide anti-corruption agreement Tuesdayin Merida, capital of the southeastern Mexican state of Yucatan.

Officials from around the world signed the first worldwide anti-corruption agreement Tuesdayin Merida, capital of the southeastern Mexican state of Yucatan.

Among the first group of countries to sign the UN Convention Against Corruption were Mexico, Kenya, Italy, the United States, Japan, Mauritius, Kuwait, Finland, Guatemala, Sweden, Indonesia, South Africa, Norway, Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuela and Peru.

The signing took place on the first day of the three-day meeting participated by 190 countries, of which 90 expressed their readiness to sign the agreement.

The document establishes for the first time a consensus-based framework to combat, at the international level, crimes such as embezzlement, money laundering, bribery and illicit enrichment.

The accord will also help the affected countries recover stolenor embezzled money transferred to other countries.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said in a written statement that the pact will "promote the transparency and accountability ofthe international business community."

The agreement, which is expected to be signed by 125 nations over the next three years, will take effect after it is ratified by legislatures of at least 30 signatory countries.
