Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Tuesday in Washington that China and the US are friends, rather than rivals. He says the two countries have bases for cooperation, as well as common interests.
Addressing the National Committee on US-China Relations and the US-China Business Council, Wen Jiabao reviewed Sino-US ties since the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949.
He said the two countries have bases for cooperation, as well as common interests.
"Sino-US cooperation is not only conducive to stability in the Asia-Pacific Rim, but also benefits global peace and development as a whole."
Wen Jiabao noted that misunderstanding and friction still exist in the process of the growth of bilateral ties. But the two sides should remain calm and sensible.
The premier also reiterated the Chinese government's basic policy on the Taiwan issue. He says the central government hopes to resolve the problem through peaceful means.
"As long as there is still a glimmer of hope, the Chinese government will not give up its efforts for peaceful reunification and a peaceful settlement."
Earlier, Wen Jiabao met with US Vice President Dick Cheney. He said Sino-US ties are the most important bilateral relations in the world, adding that the two countries see huge potential in cooperation and the further strengthening of bilateral ties.
Also on the day, the premier held talks with US Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan. Wen Jiabao introduced China's financial system reforms and the mechanism controlling the currency exchange rate. Greenspan believes that an expanding Chinese market will play a positive role in the global economy.
