A bulldozer on Tuesday morning leveled shanty bungalows built around a ventilation pavilion at Jishuitan subway station, starting a drive to eliminate hidden security risks in the capital's subway network.

Subway ventilation facilities are built as passages for personnel evacuation, rescue operation and fire control in case of emergencies, and are also used as the opening in the ground for ventilation of subway stations and for equipment repairs.

Beijing now has 95 km of urban rail transport in operation, of which subways make up for 54.15 km. The subway system is built with 95 ventilation pavilions, of which 28 are blocked, and is also constructed with 179 exits, of which five are impeded.

A circular issued by four municipal departments including the city's communications commission and public security bureau demanded that all subway pavilions, outlets for exit and entry, and the areas within the proximity of 10 meters should be removed of all structures or stored articles by March 31 next year.
