Foreign ministers of members and would-be members of the European Union (EU) agreed Monday to set January 2007 as the entrance time for the EU membership of Romania and Bulgaria.

This was announced by Franco Frattini, Foreign Minister of Italy, which is holding the EU Presidency, at a press conference after Monday's EU foreign ministers' conclave.

The decision needs the approval of the EU leaders at the European Council meeting, to be held on Dec. 12 and 13.

Of the 13 EU candidate nations, Turkey has not yet begun the membership talk, not to mention the timetable for the EU membership.

At the Copenhagen European Council held last December, the EU leaders adopted a decision to permit Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia to join the EU family.

After signing treaties with the EU and going through domestic referendum on the EU membership, the 10 nations will join the bloc on May 1, 2004.
