One out of five Chinese has a mobile phone

By October China's cellular phone popularity had reached an average of 19.5 sets for each 100 people, and in urban areas the rate has surpassed 40 sets per hundred.

At the "2003 China Mobile Operators International Forum" held on December 4, officials from the Ministry of Information Industry announced that China has formed a digital modern mobile communication network, which covers the nation and links the world, and of advanced technologies and diversified services. With a scale and user number toping the world, mobile communication has become the largest pillar of China's telecommunication service. Statistics show that by October China's mobile users had exceeded 250 million, surpassing that of fixed line users for the first time, and the capacity of mobile switch had exceeded 300 million.

Meanwhile China's mobile manufacturing industry has been moving rapidly. Now the nation has 43 whole-set producers, including 37 cellular phone makers, capable of producing 200 million sets annually.
