The computer industry has become the leading factor in promoting the growth of electronic and information technology (IT) industries in China, according to a national conference held Friday in Hefei, capital of eastern Anhui province.

From January to October this year, the computer sector in China recorded 453.7 billion yuan (US$54.6 billion) in sales, up 64.7 per cent year-on-year, said the conference on the 2004 performance of the country's electronic and IT sectors.

This means that computer business leads all electronic and IT sectors in China by contributing 15 per centage points to a 34.6 per cent growth in sales registered by all industries during the corresponding period.

China's great efforts in promoting IT development and a huge demand for IT products during the SARS period have apparently shored up production and sales of computers in the country, said IT officials.

From January to October, China's computer industry earned 11 billion yuan ($1.32 billion) in profits, up 32.3 per cent, accounting for 21 per cent of the total by the electronic and IT sectors.

The ten months saw sales of PCs and computer monitors grow year- on-year by 92.6 per cent and 54.1 per cent, respectively.

During the ten month period, China reaped 122 billion yuan ($14. 7 billion ) in sales of software of integrated systems.
