China to recover warship of ancient naval general who took over Taiwan

Chinese archaeologists were working on an offshore site to recover warship relics used by national hero Zheng Chenggong, who took back Taiwan province from Dutch invaders more than 300 years ago.

Chinese archaeologists were working on an offshore site to recover warship relics used by national hero Zheng Chenggong, who took back Taiwan province from Dutch invaders more than 300 years ago.

A cofferdam was completed Sunday to block sand that might hamper the recovery work.

According to Lin Guo, head of the recovery team, large-scale salvage work will begin in May 2004, when more relics will possibly be found.

Two fishermen found pieces of a sunken ship in January 2000 in Dongshan sea area off the coast of Fujian Province.

Archaeologists conducted an initial salvage and recovered a number of iron cannons, damaged ship planks and porcelain at the site.

In 1661 and 1662, Zheng Chenggong led his army to drive Dutch invaders out of Taiwan island.
