NATO to strengthen cooperation with Russia
The defense ministers of the NATO-Russia Council (NRC), who met in Brussels on Monday, decided to further strengthen cooperation in the fields of security and defense.

A statement issued after the meeting said both sides are encouraged by the concrete progress achieved to date in the NRC framework and that they are determined to build on the achievements and to develop the means needed to jointly cope with common threats and challenges.
"We renewed our commitment to deepening engagement towards a wide-ranging NATO-Russia partnership on defense and military issues," it said.
On cooperation against terrorism, the defense ministers hailed the progress achieved on threat assessments and urged further workon practical aspects of fight against terrorism.
The statement listed anti-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, peacekeeping, theater missile defense, military technology research, defense reform and interoperability as the key priority areas of cooperation.
"As a further demonstration of an ever-deepening NATO-Russia relationship, we welcomed the establishment of a direct secure telephone communication link between the Secretary General and theMinister of Defense of the Russian Federation," the statement said.
The NATO-Russia Founding Act on Mutual Relations, Cooperation and Security, which institutionalized and substantially enhanced the NATO-Russian partnership, was signed in May 1997. Leaders fromboth sides met in Rome in May 2002 to deepen and broaden this partnership by deciding to set up the NATO-Russia Council.
