A senior security officer was found dead at the UN headquarters in New York, with the cause of the killing remaining unclear, according to the chief of the UN security staff.

The body was discovered at the third floor of the UN headquarters in New York, in an express lounge next to the UN General Assembly's hall, Michael McCann, chief of the UN security staff told a press briefing.

Halton left his post at around 10 a.m. in the morning to take a rest in the lounge, two other security guards posting in the same area find him dead one hour later in the lounge, McCann said.

The victim was sitting in one of the single chairs in the lounge, his gun was found on the chair next to him, according to the security chief.

There is no camera installed in the area and the cause of the shooting remains unclear. New York police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were called in to help with the investigation.

Halton, a US citizen, joined the UN security force 16 years ago ."He is a warm-hearted, easygoing person," McCann said, adding he has never been assigned to conflicting areas such as Iraq.
