A series of TV specials featuring the famous Chinese mythical character Monkey King will be shown by China Central Television Station on Channel 4 -- a TV program that is aired in Chinese language overseas, starting from Monday.
The Monkey King is a key character from "the Pilgrimage to the West", the story of the eminent Chinese monk Xuanzang, who brought Buddhist holy scriptures from India to China.
It is hoped that the 10 TV specials, which run for 20 minutes each, will promote the Monkey King as a potential mascot for the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.
The audience will learn more about the creation, development and the profound impact of the Pilgrimage to the West, one of the four most famous Chinese literary classics, through interviews with specialists.
Li Angang, an expert with the Institute of Philosophy of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, heralded the move as an attempt to rejuvenate China's traditional culture.
Li, who has researched ancient Chinese literary classics, said airing of the TV specials would spark off a new craze on the subject in 2004 -- the year of the monkey in accordance with the lunar Chinese calendar.
