Interim Georgian President Nino Burdjanadze announced Wednesday that opposition leaders including Mikhail Saakashvili and Zurab Zhvania, had decided that Saakashvili would run as the sole opposition presidential candidate.

Saakashvili, a 35-year-old US-educated lawyer, said he planned to visit Russia soon to mend strained ties after the ousting of Shevardnadze, a former Soviet foreign minister once praised by the West for his role in helping to end the Cold War.

Saakashvili promised the elections on January 4 would be free and fair.
