Premier Wen Jiabao will pay an official visit to the United States, Canada, Mexico and Ethiopia from December 7 to 16, Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao announced Sunday in Beijing.
Wen will also attend the opening ceremony of the Second Ministerial Conference of the China-Africa Co-operation Forum, due to be held in Ethiopia, Liu said.
This will be the first visit of the new Chinese leadership to the United States.
Wen is expected to discuss many important issues with US leaders, and certainly the Taiwan question is one of them, said He Yafei, director-general of the ministry's department of North American and Oceanian affairs.
The United States is the largest trading partner of China and Sino-US relations bear a great significance to the two countries as well as the world, He said at a recent press conference.
The Taiwan question stands at the core of Sino-US ties, which demands the US side to abide by all its commitments on the issue, He said.
Although China and the African continent are far apart, the long history of friendly exchanges has ensured a smooth and favourable development of relations between China and African countries, the official said.
The establishment of the Sino-African Co-operation Forum, which was first held in Beijing in 2000, is regarded as a milestone in the history of Sino-African relations, said Du Qiwen, another senior foreign ministerial official in charge of African affairs.
