Two-time Olympic weightlifting champion Zhan Xugang has failed to make a strong comeback at the World Championships being held in Vancouver, Canada.

Competing in the men's 77-kilo class Wednesday, the 29-year-old lifter made three fruitless lifts in the clean and jerk category and finished without a score. The gold medal was easily won by an Iranian athlete.

Zhan Xugang resumed training a few months ago after a one-year hiatus due to injury. He's taking the opportunity of the world championships to get in form for his third Olympic appearance next year in Athens.

Despite Zhan Xugang's disappointing performance, China has won three titles at the Championships since they started last Friday.

The Championships, a qualifying event for the Athens Olympics, have attracted nearly 640 athletes from 86 countries and regions. The top 27 men's and 17 women's teams will qualify for the Olympics.

China has sent a total of 15 lifters to the Championships in an attempt to win ten places at the Athens Games, the maximum a country can get. (CRI)
