During the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, 1,100 buses will be used for Olympic Family members, the Athens 2004 Olympic Organizing Committee (ATHOC) announced Wednesday.
A press release by ATHOC said that the Olympic Family, which includes athletes, technical officials, IOC, NOC, and International Federation members, and journalists will be transported to and from competition and non-competition venues in comfortable new buses with English-speaking drivers.
With an average age of four years, the Athens fleet will be the newest fleet of buses ever used in Olympic Games.
As the majority of buses will be under the ownership of the country's national public bus company (KTEL), their participation in the Olympic Transport program will bring the greatest possible benefit.
The ATHENS 2004 Board of Directors approved the bid at its plenary session.
The great majority of the vehicles are fewer than four years old.
As the vehicles will be hired from all over Greece, the overall outlay on rental (roughly 28 million) will be supporting the national professional transport vehicle owning sector.
The program employs an adequate number of drivers (2,000) with the experience, professional standards, and enthusiasm to make their own contribution to the country's grand effort.
Throughout the lease period vehicles and their drivers will be available exclusively to ATHENS 2004, 24 hours a day. The average operating shift will be 18 hours and each vehicle will cover about 400 kilometers a day.
The duration of the lease will be between 25 and 65 days (with an average duration of 40 days) throughout the Olympic Games period (i.e. from 30-6-2004 until 2-9-2004). The daily cost to the Organizing Committee for rental of each vehicle will be 660 euros.
