Relatives get compensation after deadly mine blast in Jiangxi

Relatives of the 49 miners killed by a natural gas blast in Jianxin coal mine in east China's Jiangxi Province on Friday agreed Monday to get a reparation of between 40,000 yuan (about 4,819 US dollars) and 50,000 yuan (6,024 US dollars) each.

According to the agreements, the coal mine will provide a certain amount of subsidies to the children of the dead miners every year until they are 18.

Special teams finished their handling of the remaining problems from the accident and all the bodies of the dead miners were cremated Monday afternoon.

The teams have not discussed compensations with the seven miners injured in the blast as they are still under medical treatment in hospital, sources with the team said.

A spokesman for the teams said they would negotiate with the injured miners after they recover.

China has formed an independent investigation team to look into the explosion.

Sources with the team said it would take about two to three months to finish the final report on the cause of the accident before it is submitted to the State Council.

The Jianxin Coal Mine is a large state-owned mine with an annual capacity of 600,000 tons. It has been ordered to stop production and the Jiangxi provincial government issued an emergency notice Saturday demanding more efforts to prevent major accidents involving heavy losses in the province, especially in coal mines, fireworks factories, public venues and transport.

Though Jiangxi has punished 102 officials for their negligence in major coal mine accidents in the past two years, coal mine accidents continue to occur in the province.

Before this latest coal mine bloodshed, two other coal mine accidents claimed 22 lives in the province in July and September.
