The Cambodian King Norodom Sihanouk on Saturday proposed that his majesty royal wife Norodom Monineath Sihanouk be as a symbol of Monarchy in the case he passed away.

"The government headed by Samdech Hun Sen should regard royal wife Norodom Monineath Sihanouk as a symbol of Monarchy. The queen have served the country, nation, and people honestly, actively, and effectively," the King said in his message to the nation.

The 81-year-old king proposed that in the case he passed away, his wife Norodom Monineath Sihanouk be a symbol of Monarchy until the new king is chosen by the Council of Throne, in order to avoid political crisis and to maintain the continuation of the Monarchy. And, during that time, Chairman of the Senate Samdech Chea Sim should be the acting head of the country, he said.

On Tuesday, the King issued a communique proposing that the Council of Throne should choose the next king by simple majority, instead of consensus, in the case he passed away. It was said that Premier Hun Sen agreed with the King's idea.

According to Cambodia's Constitution, the chairman of the Senate is the acting head of state in the status of regency of the Kingdom of Cambodia. A new king should be selected by a nine-member Council of Throne within seven days after the king had passed away.

The members of the Council of Throne include: chairman of the Senate, chairman of the National Assembly, prime minister, the two heads of Buddhist Monk Sect, first and second deputy chairmen of the Senate, and the first and second Deputy chairmen of the National Assembly.
