Brazil beat Japan in straightsets Thursday to keep pressure on title favorite China at the 2003 women's volleyball World Cup.

Brazil beat Japan in straightsets Thursday to keep pressure on title favorite China at the 2003 women's volleyball World Cup.

The Brazilians, who suffered their only loss at the World Cup in the opener against China, extended their winning streak to eight with the 25-21, 25-21 and 25-23 victory.

With two matches remaining in the round-robin tournament, Brazil now stands second behind the unbeaten Chinese, 3-2 winners over the United States on Thursday.

After some nervous opening minutes, the Brazilians quickly found their rhythm and took a handy 20-16 lead. The hosts played with spirit and heart but they were up against tough opponents, who secured the first set 25-21.

Down by two sets, the Japanese opened the third set with a commanding 16-8 lead, but Brazil whittled the lead away and at The Japanese struggled to go up again at 23-21, but that's the farthest they could go.
