Putin meets Indian PM Vajpayee in Moscow

Hosting Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who arrived in Moscow Tuesday for a three-day visit, Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out Wednesday that the nature of their talks was trustful and the unique bilateral strategic partnership will remain dynamic.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that the Russian-Indian relationship will remain friendly and dynamic.

Hosting Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who arrived in Moscow Tuesday for a three-day visit, Putin pointed out that the nature of their talks was trustful and the unique bilateral strategic partnership will remain dynamic.

Vajpayee's visit reaffirmed that the Russian-Indian ties have been and will continue to be friendly and open, Putin was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying.

The Wednesday meeting between the two leaders, focusing on a wide range of issues on bilateral cooperation, yielded a package of agreements in military, trade, technology and other fields.

"We agreed to increase the number of air flights between the two countries" and to complete the Sakhalin-1 oil and gas project in Russia's Far East, said Vajpayee after the summit in Kremlin.

The Indian prime minister said Putin praised their cooperation in building the Koodankulam nuclear power plant in India, and they will "advance cooperation in the energy area."

The two leaders approved the idea of holding training exercisesand maintaining contacts between various kinds of armed forces on a regular basis.

Russian and India are satisfied with the military-technological cooperation in joint research, development and professional training, which "not only helps sustain peace and stability at regional and international levels, but also is mutually beneficialand meets the national interests of both countries," according to a joint declaration signed by the two leaders.

Putin is optimistic about a good prospect for bilateral trade, which reached 2 billion US dollars in the first nine months of theyear.

Echoing Putin, Vajpayee said he is confident that the two countries are able to find a solution to economic problems and there will be no obstacles to the further development of economic ties.

The Indian prime minister, who is accompanied by a 100-member business delegation, is due to address a group of Russian businessleaders on Thursday, and then leave for Tajikistan on the second leg of the week-long three-nation tour that will finish in Syria.
