HK university holds unveiling ceremony of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's statue
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) held an unveiling ceremony on Wednesday for a statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the forerunner of the democratic revolution in China.
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) held an unveiling ceremony on Wednesday for a statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the forerunner of the democratic revolution in China.
The statue, 1.2 meters in height, shows Dr. Sun as he looked when he visited the HKU in 1923, at the age of 56. According to records of the University, he made a speech then in the Great Hallat the invitation of the HKU Student's Union.
Dressed in Chinese long gown and mandarin jacket, the statue looked vigorous and personable, with an air of a senior scholar.
HKU was founded in 1911. Its records said Dr. Sun Yat-sen was among the first graduates of the Hong Kong College of Medicine forChinese, which was the predecessor of the HKU Faculty of Medicine.
The statue project is supervised by a number of professors and specialist. Prof. Situ Zhaoguang of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing cast the statue.
Born in 1866 in Xiangshan County (now Zhongshan City), Guangdong Province, Dr. Sun has been known across the country as a"great revolutionary and a great statesman" who fought against imperialist aggression and for the independence and freedom of China.
