A grand ceremony was held Wednesday morning in the east China metropolis of Shanghai to commemorate the 137th birth anniversary of China's revolutionary forerunner Sun Yat-sen.
Nearly 100 representatives from all circles of society, including Wang Anshun, deputy secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, and Jiang Sixian, vice mayor of Shanghai, attended the ceremony held at Sun's former residence on Xiangshan Street and bowed three times in front of the Sun Yat-sen Statue to show their respect.
Numerous flower baskets were placed in front of the bronze statue.
Born in 1866 in Xiangshan County (now Zhongshan City) in south China's Guangdong Province, Sun Yat-sen is known nationwide for leading the 1911 Revolution, which overthrew the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and ended more than 2,000 years of feudal rule in China.
As the first president of the Republic of China, Sun Yat-sen committed himself to Chinese unification and revival. On March 12,1925, he died of illness in Beijing.
