Cambodian King Norodom Sihanouk on Tuesday issued a communique proposing that the council of throne should choose the next king by simple majority in case he passed away.
The king also proposed that Samdech Chea Sim, chairman of the Senate, should be the head of the country during the waiting time for the new king to avoid political crisis.
This is the first time the king has proposed simple majority in the council of throne, which has nine members to choose the next king. He said that to avoid having no king after the council of throne was established, simple majority should be practiced, so that there would be no sabotage to any regulation in the constitutional monarchy.
The king also said that in case the recent political deadlock and crisis prolonged and he passed away when the council of throne could not be established to choose the next king, he proposed that his people should recognize Samdech Chea Sim to be the head of the country until the new king takes the throne.
According to the constitution, when the king passes away, chairman of the Senate is the acting head of state in the status of regency of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
Nine members of the council of throne are chairman of the Senate, chairman of the National Assembly, the prime minister, the two heads of Buddhist Monk Sect, first and second deputy chairmen of the Senate, first and second deputies of the National Assembly.
The country's political deadlock and crisis has prolonged since the general election in July. Talks were held on Nov. 5 to solve the deadlock, but the chairman of the National Assembly and the new government has still not been yet established.
