Automobile drivers in the northeastern province of Jilin will have to use alcohol fuel instead of ordinary gasoline starting Nov. 18 this year, or face penalty.

The provincial government announced Tuesday all filling stations, work units and individuals in the province are required to sell or use fuel with alcohol content above 10 percent after Nov. 18. Violators will be fined between 20,000 and 30,000 yuan (2,400-3,600 US dollars).

New facilities have been installed at all local filling stations for the change of fuel, and automobiles from outside the province will also have to follow the regulation, the first of its kind in China.

Zhao Binghui, director of the provincial trade and economic committee, called the move a strategic step toward reducing air pollution, expanding the use of new energy resources to deal with the shortage of petroleum and promoting agricultural development.

Jilin Province began to build an alcohol fuel project with grain, mainly corn, as raw material in September 2001, aiming at an annual output of 600,000 tons. The first production line of the project went into operation in September this year.

The province's alcohol fuel output is expected to reach 1.5 million tons by the year 2005.

Previously, trial use of alcohol fuel had been promoted in the cities of Zhengzhou, Luoyang and Nanyang of Henan Province, central China.
