Chinese, US universities cooperate in education, biomedical research

Fudan University, a prestigious Chinese university based in Shanghai, and the elite Yale University of the United States, have enhanced bilateral cooperation by establishing two cooperation centers in Shanghai.

Inaugurated on Monday, the Fudan-Yale Center for Education Cooperation is designed to conduct long-distance teaching programsthat will be shared by the two universities.

The center will invite renowned scholars to give lectures and arrange exchanges and training of teachers and students of the two universities.

Currently, 12 Fudan students are studying at Yale University under an exchange program. Previously, seven postgraduates from Yale studied at Fudan.

The universities signed a memorandum of students' exchange in 1997.

By setting up the Fudan-Yale Biomedical Research Center, also launched on Monday, the two universities aimed to enhance cooperation in the biological and medical fields and jointly conduct some research in these fields.

Construction of the Fudan-Yale Biomedical Research Center, covering 10,000 square meters, is expected to be completed before 2005.

Richard Levin, president of Yale University, said that the two cooperation and research centers provide more exchange opportunities for the two universities, adding that bilateral cooperation is expected to be carried out later in the fields of law, public health, history and culture, and international relations.

Levin made his first visit to Fudan in 2000, and Wang Shenghong, president of Fudan University, attended the celebrations commemorating the 300th anniversary of Yale in 2001.
