Chinese State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan Tuesday called for efforts to enhance the role of non-governmental organizations (NGO) in international affairs.

"With the progress in economic globalization and the increase of non-traditional security issues, NGOs are playing an increasingly significant role, especially in the fields of environmental protection, trade and arms control," Tang said at a meeting of the United Nations Association of China (UNA-China), anNGO for the promotion of peace and the development of the United Nations.

Tang said China's economic reform and diplomatic activities provide good opportunities for China's NGOs to participate in international affairs.

"I hope China's NGOs, including UNA-China, could take the opportunity to help improve understanding and cooperation between China and other countries in the world," he said.

Founded in 1985, UNA-China has actively organized activities tohelp Chinese people know more about the United Nations. In 1988, the organization won the UN Peace Messenger Award.
