The death toll in Riyadh blast rises to 17

The death toll of a midnight suicide bombing in the Saudi capital of Riyadh has risen to 17, including five children. State-run Saudi TV reported that the dead included seven Lebanese, four Egyptians, one Saudi and one Sudanese. The nationalities of the remaining four fatalities have not yet been determined.

The death toll of a midnight suicide bombing in the Saudi capital of Riyadh has risen to 17, including five children. State-run Saudi TV reported that the dead included seven Lebanese, four Egyptians, one Saudi and one Sudanese. The nationalities of the remaining four fatalities have not yet been determined.

The blast occurred Saturday night in a residential compound in the western part of Riyadh. The suicide attack is believed to have been carried out by al-Qaeda terrorists who blew themselves up in a stolen police car laden with explosives.

The explosion came one day after the US diplomatic missions in the country were closed amid warnings of possible terror attacks.

On May 12, a triple suicide bombing attack in Riyadh killed 35 people and wounded more than 100. Since then, Saudi authorities have launched a large-scale crack down on suspected militants in the country.
