Chinese and Japanese personnel on Saturday began an operation to seal up Japanese chemical weapons left after World War II in Qiqihar City, China's northernmost Heilongjiang Province.

The operation was expected to take more than 20 days.

Some abandoned chemical weapons were found earlier this year in the city and other places in northeast China, posing a constant danger for those living and working near them.

One person died and 42 were injured after barrels of abandoned Japanese mustard gas were dug up and began leaking at a construction site in Qiqihar in early August.
