Shen/Zhao lead Cup of China, expecting success of new routine Nutcracker

World Champions Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo led the pairs after the compulsory dance as Cup of China figure skating competition began in Bejing Thursday.

World Champions Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo led the pairs after the compulsory dance as Cup of China figure skating competition began in Beijing Thursday.

Under a new computer-based scoring system, Shen and Zhao earneda total score of 63.46 points, with a technical elements score of 32.02 and a presentation components score of 31.44.

Shen and Zhao, the 2003 World Championships gold medalists, led all 10 teams in the pairs short program. Their compatriots Pang Qing/Tong Jian, winners of Skate America, fell a little behind with 60.64 points.

"We feel a bit tired since we came back from Canada on Monday after a 19-hour journey." said Shen Xue, "But we are satisfied with our performance tonight."

Petrova Maria and Tikhonov Alexei ranked third after the short program with a total of 57.92 points. The Russian pair lost to Pang/Tong by a little margin of 0.12 point at the Skate America, the first event of the Grand Prix.

Tikhonv said their performance was quite good except a small mistake.

"We did a good job." said Tikhov, the world champion in 2000 World Championship, "But we made one mistake during the competition. I hope tomorrow will be good for us."

Early on Thursday, champions of Skate Canada, the second stage of Grand Prix, Navka Tatiana/Kostomarov Roman led all 12 pairs with 41.52 points in the ice dance, ahead of Grushina Elena/Goncharov Ruslan, who earned a total of 38.23.

French pair Delobel Isabelle/Schoenfelder Olivier were lying third after the compulsory dance with 37.39 points.

Japanese Guguri Fumie were in the lead after the women's short program with 60.28 points, while Ann Patrice McDonough of United States and Onda Yoshie of Japan placed second and third.
