The powerful US occupation troops are finding themselves incapable of fighting "sparrow warfare" against Iraqi guerrillas.

The US is the No. 1 military power in the world and its best-equipped troops are good at fighting long-range wars, which are overwhelmingly in their favor. But, after Iraq falls into the hands of US troops, the mechanized US troops are now functioning as a police force. Though they are powerful, they are incapable of winning guerilla wars staged by the Iraqi resistence forces. Sporadic attacks by ani-US fighters are taking heavy toll upon the US troops. Today anti-US armed forces may fire a few rockets here, and lay an ambush somewhere else tomorrow, and then they disappeared. From US President Bush declared the end of the war in Iraq on May 1 this year up to November 4, 139 US soldiers were killed altogether, of whom 31 were killed after October 26 when Iraq started the month of fast.

It is obvious that the people who started the Iraqi War tended to oversimplify the war in Iraq, thinking that they could gulp down the country without the slightest effort. They did not expect that it was easy to gulp down the country, but difficult to digest. Now hundreds of thousands of US soldiers are acting as policemen in Iraq, but it is of not much help to the Iraqi security situation and the sporadic attacks launched by Iraqis are numerous, and even safety for the UN personnel in Baghdad cannot be guaranteed. The US is now in a dilema. Of course, it would be very reluctant to cough up what it has gained in the war, but on the other hand, the increasing number of US casualties has resulted in anti-war protests at home. Those protesters demanded the US troops to withdraw immediately from Iraq. A mother who has lost his son in the Iraqi War made a public speech: " We want Bush to realize that our children are being killed in Iraq We do not need more deaths."

Let the people of each country to manage their own affairs free from outside interference. Trying to impose one's own political model or values onto other countries can only be the daydream of those who style themselves as the Savior. (Nov. 5, PLA Daily)
