China smashes Poland for 5th straight win at World Cup

World Grand Prix champions China steadily moved towards their first women's volleyball World Cup title in 18 years by whitewashing European champions Poland 3-0 in Sendai Thursday.

World Grand Prix champions China steadily moved towards their first women's volleyball World Cup title in 18 years by whitewashing European champions Poland 3-0 in Sendai Thursday.

The Chinese hammered Poland 25-16, 25-19 and 25-17 in 61 minutes for their fifth straight win at the 2003 tournament.

"Poland is a very strong team, but the players are not used to our variety in attacking tactics. That made the match easier for us," said Chinese head coach Chen Zhonghe.

"They (the Poles) did not play to their best today," Chen added."They have very good players, and I think the team has great potential."

Star spiker Malgorzata Glinka finished with a game-high 17 points, but that was not enough to save the Polish from a fourth straight loss at the round-robin tournament.

Liu Yanan led four Chinese in double digits with 12 points. The 1.96-meter Zhao Ruirui had eight kills and three blocks for a total of 11 points and Yang Hao and Wang Lina added 10 points apiece for China.

The unbeaten China will play South Korea in their next match scheduled for Toyama on Saturday.

Twelve teams are competing at the tournament with top three finishers to qualify for the Athens Olympics in 2004.
