Nine people were killed and three injured in a traffic accident on Tuesday in Hami, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, local authorities confirmed Wednesday.

A truck from a textile mill in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region rear-ended a tractor with 11 passengers on board Tuesday morning near the Hongxing Pasture.

Eight were killed on the spot and another died on the way to hospital.

The passengers on the tractor were cotton-picking farmers from Gansu Province and workers of the pasture.

Initial investigation showed that the driver of the truck failed to brake before the collision.

Local traffic authorities said that the accident is under further investigation.
