Macao media pay tribute to China's astronaut upon his arrival

China's first astronaut Yang Liwei arrived in Macao Wednesday noon with the Delegation of China's First Manned Space Mission to whom all the major Macao newspapers devoted their front-page.

China's first astronaut Yang Liwei arrived in Macao Wednesday noon with the Delegation of China's First Manned Space Mission to whom all the major Macao newspapers devoted their front-page.

The Special Administrative Region's largest newspaper, Macao Daily, carried a header in prominent characters announcing the visit of China's space hero to the city.

The newspaper reported that the re-entry capsule of the Shenzhou 5 spacecraft, in which Yang traveled over 600,000 kilometers in space on Oct. 15-16, was transported to Macao along with a batch of the other exhibits to be on display in the Exhibition of China's First Manned Space Mission in Macao at 2:00 a.m. Wednesday. The exhibition will be open here around-the-clock for free during the delegation's two-day stay.

The Va Kio Daily carried a schedule of Yang's activities in Macao from Nov. 5 to 6. It said that Yang could expect a large welcoming crowd at his arrival in the Ferry Terminal.

The Citizen's Daily carried a large photo of Yang on the front-page, and a map depicting the locations where Yang's activities will be held. The newspaper also issued a special edition with a roundup on the full process of the launch and retrieval of China'sfirst manned spacecraft, the astronaut's tough training experienceas well as his high-profile five-day visit to Hong Kong.

Yang, the 38-year-old fighter pilot turned astronaut who traveled over 600,000 kilometers in space in spacecraft "Shenzhou 5" on Oct. 15-16, is regarded as a hero of the Chinese nation.The delegation is scheduled to pay a two-day visit in Macao.
