US President George W. Bush saidon Monday mounting US death toll in Iraq would not force the United States to run from the country.
In his first public comment on the death of 16 US soldiers in the downing of a helicopter in Iraq Sunday, Bush said while Americans mourns every loss of a brave soldier, the mission in Iraq is vital and will continue.
"The enemy in Iraq believes America will run. That's why they're willing to kill innocent civilians, relief workers, coalition troops," Bush said in a speech in the US state of Alabama.
"America will never run," he said. "The mission in Iraq is vital. We will not rest, we will not tire until the danger to America and civilization is removed."
Sixteen US soldiers were killed and 20 others wounded when a USmilitary transport helicopter they were on board was hit by a missile and crashed in a field west of Baghdad Sunday morning.
The latest death toll bring the total number of US troops who have died in Iraq to 379 -- almost two-thirds of them since Bush announced an end to major combat operations on May 1.
