A US soldier was killed in a bomb attack in western Iraq on Friday, the US military said.
The killed soldier was from the 82nd Airborne Division and the attack took place near Khaldiya, 80 km west of Baghdad, said a military spokesman.
Before the incident, US Defense Ministry confirmed that 117 US soldiers had been killed by hostile fire in Iraq since US President George W. Bush declared the major campaign over on May 1.
The death toll exceeded the number of US soldiers killed in combat during the strikes that ousted Saddam Hussein's regime in April.
