The fifth power generator of China's Three Gorges Project, being built on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, was formally connected to the power grids at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday after a 72-hour test run.
With the addition of the generating unit, known as the No. 4 unit, by 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, the Three Gorges Project had generated 3,872 million kW-hours of electricity since its first generator began operation on July 10 this year.
Launched in 1993 and expected to be completed in 2009, the Three Gorges Project will be installed with 26 generators, each with a generating capacity of 700,000 kW.
All five generators are working well and the last one to be putinto commercial operation this year, the No. 1 unit, is being installed and is planned to begin operation in November this year, said Zhang Cheng, director of the Three Gorges Hydropower Plant.
The Three Gorges Project has begun to pay dividends this year, playing an important role in flood control, power generation, navigation, water diversion and environmental protection.
In this year alone, it is expected to supply a total of 6,130 million kW-hours of electricity to southwest China's Chongqing Municipality and the Central China and East China Power Grids.
