The Hong Kong International Lighting Fair and Hong Kong International Hardware & Home Improvement Fair opened at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center Monday.
For the first time this year, the two fairs organized by Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC) are being held concurrently to provide buyers with twice the souring opportunities.
Hong Kong's lighting and hardware industries have shown impressive growth in the first eight months this year. For lighting products, exports to Europe and Chinese mainland increased by 20 percent and 10 percent respectively. For hardware products, total world exports increased by 13 percent, while exports to the mainland market increased by 21 percent, Michael Sze, executive director of TDC, said at the opening ceremony.
Industry players were optimistic of market outlook due to the strong demand of higher-end lighting and hardware products in Chinese mainland. In addition, the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) between Hong Kong and mainland, which will be in place from Jan. 1, 2004, will enable Hong Kong's lighting and hardware companies to have additional market access in the distribution sector on mainland market, Sze said.
According to TDC, both fair recorded a double-digit growth in exhibitors this year. The lighting Fair attracted 742 exhibitors from 22 countries and regions, up 58 percent compared with last year. The show has become the largest of its kind in Asia and the fourth largest in the world.
The Hardware Fair attracted 151 exhibitors this year, a 15 percent growth compared to 2002.
