An American soldier was killed Sunday during a rocket attack on Baghdad's Rashid Hotel where US Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz was staying, the US military said.
The soldier, who was assigned to the US-led Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA), was killed and 15 others were wounded when a barrage of rockets were fired on the hotel and caused constructional damages, a spokeswoman said.
The wounded were "seven US civilians, four US military and four non-American CPA partners," the spokeswoman confirmed.
Wolfowitz emerged at a press conference three hours after he escaped the attack and said one American had possibly been killed and several others injured.
The US military said six to eight rockets were fired by unknown fighters shortly after 6:00 a.m. (0300 GMT), but local residents said they heard up to 20 explosions.
The new death brings to 109 the number of US soldiers killed by hostile fire in Iraq since US President George W. Bush declared themajor combat over on May 1.
