Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), met Saturday with Tamisuke Watanuki, former speaker of the House of Representatives of the Japanese Diet, and his party.
Referring to the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Sino-Japanese Treaty of Peace and Friendship which falls this year, Wu said that China and Japan have pushed forward the bilateral ties with the common aspiration of promoting mutual understanding, trust and cooperation during the past years.
"The peaceful and friendly situation in Sino-Japanese relations was not easily achieved," he added.
Wu said that China's new collective leadership would like to further the relations with Japan based on the Sino-Japanese Joint Statement, the Sino-Japanese Treaty of Peace and Friendship and the Sino-Japanese Joint Declaration.
He noted that the maintenance of the friendly relations between the NPC and the Diet will help push forward the relations between the two countries.
Wu stressed that the leaders of the two countries should learn from history and face the future and seriously handle the issues concerned. This is important for stabilizing and developing the bilateral ties, he added.
Watanuki said that the friendly exchanges between the Diet and the NPC constitutes an important part for Japan-China relations. He said that although he is no longer the speaker of the House of Representatives, he still would like to continue his efforts to promote friendly relations between Japan and China.
