Tianjin makes huge investment to improve public health facilities
North China's port city of Tianjin has decided to invest 420 million yuan (50 million US dollars) on improving some local public health facilities in the coming year.

Some 160 million yuan (19 million dollars) will be used for the expansion of the municipal health and disease prevention center on an additional area of 2.86 hectares. Construction on the project is to start at the end of the year, including the building of a new 10,000-sq-m square for public use.
A new hospital to mainly treat respiratory diseases will be built at a cost of 150 million yuan (18 million dollars) on an area of 13 hectares.
Part of 100 million yuan (12 million dollars) has been used for the first phase expansion of the local hospital especially for treating contagious diseases, which is to be finished at the end of October. The second phase, to commence in November, is expected to be completed at the end of 2004.
The remaining spending will go to the resettlement of the local first-aid station at a cost of 36 million yuan (4.3 million dollars), and the expansion of disease control and prevention centers and departments treating contagious diseases, located in the suburbs, according to municipal health officials.
