The Fifth Asia-Europe Young Parliamentarians Meeting (YPM) opened Friday morning in Guilin city, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, with about 100 participants from Asia and Europe.

Participants will have extensive discussions on promoting common development in Asia and Europe through strengthened inter-parliamentary dialogue and on international issues and new security concepts, economic globalization and developing countries, and exchanges and assimilation among cultures and civilizations.

Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, sent a congratulatory message, praising the meeting's goals.

Wu said the YPM had vigorously promoted dialogue and exchanges among young parliamentarians within the framework of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) process, and had gradually become an important bridge between young parliamentarians of Asia and Europe.

He believed the meeting would enhance the understanding, trust and friendship among young parliamentarians of the two continents and make fresh contributions to the strengthening of political dialogue, trade and economic cooperation and cultural exchanges between Asia and Europe and to the realization of the ASEM purpose of establishing a new type of equal partnership between Asia and Europe.

"Young people are full of hope and young people are our future. Young parliamentarians of Asia and Europe shoulder important obligations to the future of these two continents," said Wu.

Uyunqimg, vice-chairwoman of the NPC Standing Committee, attended the opening ceremony here Friday morning and hosted a welcoming reception for the participants.

The meeting is scheduled to close Sunday and will pass a consensus-based declaration.
