Iran not decides on date for signing additional nuclear protocol: Khatami
Iranian President Mohammad Khatami said Wednesday that his government has not decided on a date to sign the additional protocol to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Iranian President Mohammad Khatami said Wednesday that his government has not decided on a date to sign the additional protocol to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
"We are discussing it. I cannot give the exact date" to sign the document that allows tougher inspections regime for Iranian nuclear program, he said.
Khatami noted that even after Iran signs the accord, it would have to be submitted to the parliament for approval.
Hassan Rowhani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said on Tuesday evening that Iran would sign up to the NPT additional protocol before Nov. 20.
Meanwhile, he stressed, Iran reserves the right to resume uranium enrichment after it agreed Tuesday to meet IAEA demands for a suspension.
"The duration of suspending uranium enrichment is voluntary. The duration can be one day, one year or longer. It's up to Iran," Rowhani said.
Tehran agreed Tuesday to meet IAEA demands for more strict inspections regime, full disclosure of its nuclear activities and a suspension of uranium enrichment after foreign ministers of Britain, France and Germany held intensive talks with Iranian top officials.
The deal was struck just 10 days before the expiry of an IAEA deadline for Iran to ease international suspicions over its nuclear program.
